September 23, 2010

Building on the success of last year's season, Unhinged Productions is wildly excited to announce plans for the 2010/11 theatre season. Entitled The Untraditional Season, our 12th season includes two regional premiers and a literary classic that will examine our conventions, standards, and culture. Although we have chosen to produce a season focused on comedy, the themes are profound and we do take laughter rather seriously...

The Untraditional Season kicks off with a contemporary, gay twist on Dickens' Christmas staple. In our version, the tale's message of redemption and reclamation remains intact amidst campy merriment, sexy ghosts and good interior design. A Queer Carol is a warm-hearted and joyful alternative celebrating our tribe's special differences and shared humanity.

Our second production follows the high jinks of an actress as she schemes to woo back her estranged girlfriend, also an actress, by playing the MALE lead opposite her ex in a production of Shakespeare's As You Like It.One of Shakespeare's most famous speeches comes from As You Like It: "All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players." The playwright takes that up a notch: "The whole world's a fuckin' drag show," he tells us, more or less describing his play's theme. She Stoops to Comedy is a gender-bending romp that blurs the line between actor and character and explores the significance of gender and sexual identity from practically every conceivable angle.

We will conclude The Untraditional Season with a youthful and atmospheric production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is a magical legend of people desperately trying to love each other in spite of volatile emotions, mistaken identity and meddling sprites. Our interpretation will be a rebellious, sultry, queer escapade to the animal side of our natures. Sounds like fun, huh?

In addition to our plays, we offer you engaging theatre workshops for learners of all ages and fabulous events to raise funds and awareness for Unhinged. It is impossible for us to create real theatre without the help of the community. After all, theatre doesn't really happen until the audience arrives. In that respect, every single performance is unique. We promise to create the best stories we can and honor our community, but we need your continued support and attendance. Buy a season pass today and save your seat for the show.

I look forward to seeing you in the audience.

Sincerely,

Joe Angel Babb
